Muay Thai, also known as Thai Boxing, is a martial art with origins set deep in the history of Thailand. It is a brutally effective and athletically demanding combat sport, with participants utilizing fists, elbows, knees and legs as striking weapons.
At Fairfax Jiu Jitsu, we offer an authentic Muay Thai program that consists of traditional Thai-style training methods. Every class is lead by our Thailand-trained instructors. Each Muay Thai training session begins with skipping rope followed by a short stretching session to properly warm up the body for the strenuous workout ahead. Students then shadowbox to perfect the form and balance involved with each technique. Thai-style pad work typically comes next. This is where students build the skills necessary to actually utilize the techniques with accurate power. Once the fundamentals are set, students engage in controlled, technical sparring with minimal power in order to build the reflexes and timing necessary to effectively apply the techniques. Finally, students clinch spar to round out the training. Clinching is a critical aspect of Muay Thai in Thailand, but it is a component quite often neglected at schools across the United States. At Fairfax Jiu Jitsu Academy, we pride ourselves on having a complete, authentic curriculum that includes in-depth study of the clinch and all other techniques present in the art of Muay Thai.
